Luigi: Ciao, Marco.
Marco: Ciao, Luigi. Come stai ?
Luigi: Bene e tu ?
Marco: Bene, grazie.
Luigi: Beh, allora ciao.
Marco: Ciao. Alla prossima !
▻ ciao: hello
Ciao can be used to greet someone and in this case it can be translated as hello or hi. Be careful, though, because it is an informal greeting, so we can use it only with people that we are on a first name basis with.
▻ come stai ?: how are you ?
This expression is also informal. We’ll learn the formal version of how are you ? very soon.
▻ bene e tu ?: fine and you ?
Tu is the informal version of you and we can only use it to address someone that we know very well like a friend or a family member.
▻ beh: well…
Beh is the colloquial, short form of bene.
▻ allora ciao: bye then
We can also use ciao when we are parting ways and in this case it corresponds to the English bye.
▻ alla prossima: see you
This expression literally means until next time.
