This is the formal version of excuse me. In the dialogue, the boy is asking a stranger in the street for directions, so he has to use this form of courtesy to sound polite. The informal version of excuse me is scusa.

▻ dov’è la scuola ?: where is the school ?

Dove è usually becomes dov’è by dropping the e in dove so that the words can run smoothly together.

▻ mi dispiace: I’m sorry

This expression literally means it makes me sorry.

▻ non lo so: I don’t know

Literally: I don’t know it.
