Sig.ra De Angeli: Buongiorno, signor Rossi !
Sig. Rossi: Salve, Signora De Angeli !
Sig.ra De Angeli: Come sta ?
Sig. Rossi: Tutto bene, e Lei ?
Sig.ra De Angeli: Anche io sto bene.
Sig. Rossi: Sono contento.
Sig.ra De Angeli: Grazie mille.
Sig. Rossi: Prego.
â–» signor Rossi: Mr Rossi
The word signore means gentleman or sir, but when it is followed by someone’s last name, it means Mr.
In this case, it loses the last -e and becomes signor.
â–» signora De Angeli: Mrs De Angeli
The word signora means madam or lady, but when it is followed by someone’s last name, it means Mrs.
â–» come sta ?: how are you ?
This is the formal way of asking someone how they are doing. So we have to use this expression with strangers, older people (unless they’re family members), our boss and so on. Compare this expression with the informal version which is come stai ?
â–» anche: also, too
Anche io sto bene means I’m fine too.
â–» sono contento: I’m glad
â–» grazie mille: thanks so much
Literally this expression means thanks a thousand.
â–» prego: you’re welcome
Prego means you’re welcome in response to grazie, but it can also mean please or be my guest depending on the context.
Posso entrare ? = Can I come in ?
Prego ! = Please do ! / Be my guest !
