Can you also say “era buio”, instead of “faceva buio”? Or changes the meaning then?

Ciao Corinne,
it slightly changes the meaning. If you say, “quando era buio”, it means that it was already dark and when it was dark, they played pranks on their sister. If you say “quando faceva buio”, it means when it started getting dark, they played pranks. “Era” describes a state, “Faceva” describes a change.
